After a stirring appearance on the 3rd Correspondant Compilation, Bird of Paradise brings his sophomoric contribution to the label in the form of a full length EP, replete with a remix from Lauer.
Title track, Baal, is laden with bi polar melodies and the trademark “BoP” reverbed drum sound, the combination of which, alongside an almost liquid bass line, make it simultaneously mournful, driving and continually surprising for its concise five and a half minute duration.
Taking the sombre aesthetic into even more heart wrenching territory, “and the half light” manages the uncanny trick of being at once tear jerking and eminently danceable.
The remaining original, Brothel Drummer was actually the first track to bring BoP to the attention of Correspondant, via a youtube video shared with label boss Jennifer Cardini by label artist Man Power (also a close friend of BoP). An achingly low tempo and a generous helping of New Wave pathos make this an incredibly distinct, memorable and moving piece of music. Unclassifiable by its very nature, which is something that paradoxically makes it utterly “Correspondant”
For his remix of the title track, Lauer pulls the original versions melodies in to line, and rearranges the track in to some kind of lost electronic pop find from 1986, lending a sense of playful lightness to the overall EP, but still retaining the ever present pull on the listeners heart strings.
